Exactly 34 years ago today, American country music singers Johnny Lee and Lane Brody topped the country charts with their song “The Yellow Rose.” They co-wrote the lyrics with John Wilder. The single became Lee’s fourth No. 1 while for Brody, it’s her first and only No. 1 country song. Although the tune is a collaborative project, it was included on Lee’s studio album ‘Til the Bars Burn Down that dropped off in 1984. The single gained huge popularity both in the United States and Canada. It scored No. 1 on the US Hot Country Songs as well as on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.

The song’s melody was set to the tune of a traditional folk song entitled “The Yellow Rose of Texas.” Its popularity is closely associated with its use as a marching song among Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. Many artists became fascinated with the song and began making their own cover of it.

On the other hand, an NBC TV series with the same title used the single as its theme song. Though only the first stanza and chorus of the song was used on the program. The show which runs from October 1983 – May 1984 was starred by the American actress, singer, and model Cybill Shepherd.

In the song, “Yellow Rose” refers to a woman from Texas whom the male narrator adores. They parted ways a long time ago and such moment was truly heartbreaking for them both. He said that he’s determined to find and get her back in his life. And when that time comes, there would be no more woes for them to face. They will be together happily until eternity.
