Robinson is looking to rebuild his value after three rough seasons. The 30-year-old was one of the most reliable receivers in the NFL from 2015 to '20. He had three seasons with at least 1,100 yards and averaged 68 receptions, 909 yards and six touchdowns per season during that six-season span.
Since the start of the 2021 season, Robinson has recorded a total of 1,029 yards and four touchdowns in 39 games. He set career-lows with the Pittsburgh Steelers in yards (280) and yards per reception (8.2) over a full season last year, excluding 2017 when he only played one game due to a torn ACL.
The Steelers released Robinson on March 8 in a move that saved the team $10 million against the cap.
Given how little receiver depth the Giants have right now, taking a low-risk flyer on Robinson at this point in the offseason has no downside. He can work with a player like Nabers to help him refine elements of his game, while also trying to make an impression on the coaching staff going into OTAs and training camp.
Robinson could also be an option in the slot, especially given the uncertainty around Darren Waller's status. The veteran tight end has talked publicly about potentially retiring before the start of the season, though he has yet to make anything official at this point.
Assuming Daniel Jones is the starting quarterback going into the season, the Giants need to surround him with as many viable pass-catchers as they can to improve an offense that ranked 30th in scoring and 31st in pass yards per game last season.
Robinson is capable of making contested catches in traffic. He won't make many plays after the catch, but 54 of his 105 receptions over the past three seasons have gone for first downs.
