Alvear Icon Hotel & Residences, Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, Argentina
William Harris A ground-floor restaurant with a light-loving glass roof, Sunny Yard, is where breakfast (a spread of fresh fruits, cereals, rolls, pastries, pre-cooked eggs and espressos), brunch and lunch are served; close by is a bar, wine and cava tasting room and cigar shop. The rooftop bar, Crystal, on the 32nd floor – a fast lift goes only to the top – has an impressive range of whiskies, vermouths, Argentine aperitifs, bubblies and wines – and superb views. Bagels, pizzas, burgers and lamb empanadas are also available.
Kayla is a very sophisticated restaurant on the 31st floor, with stunning views of downtown; request a window-side table when booking. Chef Diego Novo has taken a tapas-style approach, serving up small, beautifully presented plates of pickled mullet fish, smoked duck, black pudding croute, foie gras - all relatively uncommon on BA menus - and larger mains such as pastas, grilled lamb and tender steaks. A tasting menu with matching wines is available and with the peso very weak is no longer a deep-pocket option. On the floor above, Crystal Bar enjoys the same views and does good gin cocktails. Glitter is the only deluxe “glatt kosher” dining space in the city.
