Once you have finished installing Baldur’s Gate III, you will be presented with a choice before even starting the game. That is, whether to use Vulkan or DirectX 11 to run the game. But which one of these is the better overall choice for running the game? We are going to go over both of them so that you know whether you should start Baldur’s Gate 3 using Vulkan or DirectX 11.

Use Vulkan or DirectX 11 in BG3?

Even before getting into character creation, this is the first major choice that you will have to make concerning BG3. Which is only to be expected, as the game doesn’t provide you with a lot of information as to which choice is the best one here. Only that Vulkan is the default option, and that you can change to DirectX 11 if you want to do so. But what do these even mean? Well, Vulkan and DirectX are cross-platform API (application programming interface) standards for computer graphics. As to which one is the better choice – typically that would be Vulkan. That is why it is the default setting.

However, in some rare cases, players have reported that they had issues such as graphical glitches and stuttering when using Vulkan. These went away once they switched over to DirectX 11. It’s best to think of it like this – Vulkan is the superior option, but if you have experience issues using it, then you should try DirectX to see if that works better. Although, we were hoping that the full version of the game will be more stable than the Early Access, there are a lot of errors at the beginning of the game. If you have any error while launching the game then switch between Vulkan and DirectX options.
