LONDON, England -- Arsenal and Brazil were left counting the cost of the broken foot sustained by midfielder Edu during a 3-1 League Cup win for the Gunners over Everton on Tuesday night.
"I don't know how long he will be out,'" said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but Edu now looks certain to miss Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on November 17.
He will join Bayern Munich midfielder Ze Roberto and Porto striker Luis Fabiano who have also pulled out of the match in Quito.
Edu had been included in the squad after recovering from a calf injury and with fellow Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva already on the sidelines with a hamstring injury it leaves Wenger with a headache ahead of the big derby clash with Tottenham on Saturday.
Not that Premier League champions Arsenal have too much to worry about as the strength of their reserve squad was again demonstrated against a full-strength Everton squad.
Edu was the most experienced player on show as Wenger fielded a team of youngsters against a team who occupy third place in the Premier League.
"It's not only that we qualified, but that we did it in style and we love doing that," he said.
"This team has quality and it shows the future of the club is in good hands.
"I was pleased we didn't panic at 1-0 down. After that, it was a good mixture of enthusiasm and quality. They played intelligently, technically well and with the spirit we like to play the game."
But Edu, who skippered the Arsenal youngsters, came under fire from Everton manager David Moyes for the two-footed tackle that led to his injury.
He was angry that his challenge on James McFadden only merited a yellow card and believed that the Brazilian should have been sent off.
"I thought the game dramatically turned on the referee not sending Edu off," claimed Moyes, even though his side were then over-run in the second-half as Arsenal won 3-1.
"We were 1-0 up and then Edu made a two-footed tackle over the ball. He was very influential on the game. "Arsenal played very well but if he had been sent off, it would have changed the game. Definitely."
