The Daily Mirror published pictures that appear to show Moss taking cocaine.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British supermodel Kate Moss has issued an apology to "all the people I have let down" after media allegations that she used cocaine.

But Thursday's statement did not acknowledge any drug use by Moss, an issue that has swirled around the 31-year-old since the Daily Mirror published pictures last week appearing to show her taking cocaine.

"I take full responsibility for my actions. I also accept that there are various personal issues that I need to address and have started taking the difficult, yet necessary, steps to resolve them," Moss said in a statement.

"I want to apologize to all of the people I have let down because of my behavior, which has reflected badly on my family, friends, co-workers, business associates and others," she said.

"I am trying to be positive, and the support and love I have received are invaluable."

The statement was issued on the same day that cosmetics firm Rimmel London became the latest company to distance itself from Moss, who is estimated to earn about £4 million ($7.22 million) a year from her modeling contracts.

"Rimmel London is shocked and dismayed by the recent press allegations surrounding Kate Moss' behavior. We are currently reviewing her contract," company spokeswoman Caroline Pycroft said.

Moss has already been dropped by Burberry, the UK fashion label, and Swedish clothing giant Hennes & Mauritz.

H&M, Europe's largest fashion retailer, had planned to use Moss to help launch a new collection designed by Stella McCartney that goes on sale in November.

H&M said that after the pictures appeared in the Mirror, Moss promised in writing to abide by a company policy that models be "healthy, wholesome and sound."

The company said Tuesday that "after evaluating the situation, we have decided that a campaign with Kate Moss is not consistent with H&M's clear disassociation from drugs."

However, reports that the company had said Moss admitted taking cocaine were denied by H&M. Spokeswoman Liv Asarnoj told CNN that Moss said she was "regretful" but declined to give more details.

Meanwhile, Burberry said Wednesday that a campaign involving Moss scheduled for this autumn had been cancelled by mutual consent.

"Kate has always been a fantastic model and highly professional for Burberry," it said.

"We are saddened by her current circumstances and hope she overcomes her problems as soon as possible. We wish Kate all the best."

Also Wednesday, French fashion house Chanel said Wednesday it would not renew a contract with Moss that expires in October. However, it said the decision was not related to the drug-use allegations.

Moss also faces a possible police probe after Ian Blair, Britain's top police officer, said he had personally ordered a Scotland Yard investigation.

If she is found to have used cocaine, she could be charged with possession of a Class A drug or cautioned. Blair said the decision over whether or not to charge Moss would take into account her effect on young people.

He also appeared to suggest that if there was a case against her he would prefer to see a charge rather than a caution.

"We have to look at the impact of this kind of behavior on impressionable young people and if there is evidence, something should be done about it," Blair said.

"I can remember being asked a question about a previous individual who was given a caution. I think that was a wrong decision."

Although the Metropolitan Police has a policy of pursuing drug dealers rather than users, those rules are "adaptable to the impact of events," Blair said.

"If we have an allegation about a person who is so much in the public eye and a role model, it seems to me important that we investigate," he said.

Moss's lawyer, Gerrard Tyrrell, has not commented on the police investigation, Reuters reported.

The model, who has a two-year-old daughter, won libel damages in July over claims that she collapsed in a cocaine-fueled coma in Barcelona in 2001.

Moss, who was born in Croydon, south of London, was discovered at JFK airport in New York by a modeling agency as a 14-year-old schoolgirl, and has since appeared on the covers of many magazines.

Tabloid interest in her intensified this year because of her relationship with pop star Pete Doherty, who has admitted to addiction to cocaine and heroin.
