Cowboys Rumors: Al Harris to be Promoted to Assistant HC amid Mike McCarthy Buzz | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Mia Morrison Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is entering the final year of his contract, but he is planning on rewarding one of his assistants with a promotion.
Per Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, Cowboys defensive backs coach Al Harris will have assistant head coach added to his current title once the promotion is made official.
Harris was requested to interview for a position on the Washington Commanders coaching staff after former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was hired as head coach. However, Dallas blocked him from interviewing, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. Instead, he is likely on track for a defensive coordinator position of his own after Monday's promotion.
A two-time Pro Bowl cornerback who played for five teams during his career from 1997 to 2011, Harris quickly transitioned to coaching after he stepped off the field for the last time. He was hired by the Miami Dolphins as an intern in 2012. He then coached the secondary for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013 to 2018.
After a brief stint at FAU, Harris was hired by the Cowboys in 2020 and reunited with McCarthy, who was his head coach with the Green Bay Packers in the latter half of his playing career.
Dallas has ranked in the top three in turnover differential in each of the last three seasons and led the league in interceptions in 2021. While losing Quinn is a blow to the coaching staff, retaining Harris helps maintain some level of continuity.
With the 2024 season potentially being McCarthy's last with the Cowboys, the team is certainly hoping to end things on a high note after the disappointing finish to the 2023 campaign.
