Delores B. Selby – Metropolitan Funeral
Sophia Edwards Delores Brown Selby was born in Norfolk, Virginia on February 20, 1943 to the late Roy and Elizabeth Melvin. She raised her children in Tidewater Gardens and Huntersville. She worked for Peoples Drug Store as a cook and in Be-Lo and Fresh Pride as a cashier and front desk manager before retiring.
Momma was very proud of the daughters she successfully raised as a single mother. She was also a doting grandmother to her grandchildren, Jerrod and Kaiya. We would often hear screams and shouts on game night during football season, between her and Jerrod. “Go Redskins! Stop him! Get the ball!” While Jerrod, a lifelong Steelers fan, is heard in the far distance “Grandma your team is still not going to the Super Bowl.” She and Kaiya were like best friends that laughed about most things only they thought were funny.
She was a giver. If she came across anyone in need, and she could afford to assist, she would do so. We recall one story of a grandmother that was unable to purchase a pair of eyeglasses for her granddaughter. Momma overheard the conversation and asked for permission to purchase a pair. Based upon her own struggles, she easily identified with those in need.
Her children are a witness of how she quietly walked through her health challenges over more than a decade. She never complained but humbly accepted the path that God had for her. She was a fighter.
She dedicated her life to Christ on Sunday, January 19, 1998 at Turning Point Church where she joined her husband as a fellow believer in Christ. At Turning Point, she found a place of fellowship under the leadership of Pastor Clarence McPherson. She especially enjoyed the praise and worship portion of the service. There’s No God Like Jehovah!
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 23 years, Linwood, to whom she dedicated her life as a caregiver for more than 10 years with the assistance of her daughters Deborah, Sebrina and Kimberly. Two sisters, Isabelle Melvin and Barbara Ann Stith. Two grandchildren: Jerrod and Kaiya. Her best friends: David and Laura & a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, stepchildren, family and friends.
