Eva de la Caridad Mendes, also known as Eva Mendes, was conceived on March 5, 1974, in Miami, Florida, by Eva Pérez Suárez and Juan Carlos Méndez. Her Cuban parents separated when she was very young. In Los Angeles' Silver Lake area, Eva's mother raised her.

Since her family is Roman Catholic, Eva once entertained the idea of becoming a nun. She went to Glendale, California's Hoover High School and briefly attended California State University, Northridge to study marketing. She left college early to pursue an acting career.
