According to his autopsy report, the amount of ketamine that 'Friends' star Matthew Perry had in his system was equivalent to the general anesthesia given to surgical patients.

The news comes after the 54-year-old actor was found dead in his hot tub in October.

The drug is dangerous and can leave users in a 'trance' when taken in the quantities that Perry ingested, especially if they enter water.

According to Dr. Philip Wolfson, one of the world's best known experts on ketamine, noted that the amount found in Perry's bloodstream was a lot.

"He really did himself in. He must have taken a large amount. You don't do this and go swimming or go into a pool of any sort," Wolfson told The Post.

How much ketamine was in Perry's system?

Perry's toxicology report found that 3,540 ng/ml of ketamine was found in his peripheral blood source and 3,271 ng/ml in his central blood source.

Coronary artery disease and buprenorphine also contributed to his death, though the primary factor was "acute effects of the anesthetic ketamine."

No alcohol was found in Perry's system.

Dangers of ketamine

Angelique Campen, who works as an emergency doctor at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, told CBS News that when taken recreationally, ketamine can be dangerous.

"What I foresee happened with him is, what it does is put you in kind of a trance state, so he probably was in the hot tub in a trance state, slipped under the water and drowned," she said.

"So, the ketamine in and of itself doesn't stop your breathing, but it can keep you from waking up if you are submerged."

Taking high amounts of ketamine can leave users in what's called a 'k-hole', in which they are unable to speak or move. There is no word on whether Perry was in such a state when he passed away.

Despite its dangers, American Addiction Centers says that fatalities from the drug, even in the amount that Perry had in his system, are rare.
