Loved by some and abhorred by others, Georgia Tech’s “honeycomb” football helmets are available to fans who are willing to pay a dear price for them.

The Tech athletic department has put what it termed a “very limited number” of the game-worn helmets up for sale starting next Monday. The helmets debuted in 2012 and have been worn on occasion since then, perhaps most memorably in the “Miracle on Techwood Drive” win over Florida State in 2015.

The helmets are being discontinued as part of Tech's brand refinement and switch to Adidas. It would not be a surprise if Adidas designed an alternate helmet for the Yellow Jackets to wear in the future. Adidas schools Miami, Arizona State, Nebraska, Louisville and N.C. State, among others, have worn alternate uniforms and helmets in recent seasons.

The helmets are $600, which will go toward the renovation of the team’s player lounge and recovery area. But just to have the right to purchase the helmets, fans must either be football season-ticket holders, active donors to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund ($1,000 or more) or have given to the fund that enabled the hiring of additional recruiting staff.

Fans can still be eligible to purchase the helmets, which will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10 a.m. Monday, by buying season tickets or giving $1,000 to either fund by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.
