Gilda Radner was an absolute icon in the world of comedy and acting, bringing a smile to millions of people’s faces with her exuberant sketches, quirky characters and endlessly enthusiastic spirit. 

Her most iconic role being on Saturday Night Live as Zany, Radner remained a beloved figure in the industry. Sadly, in 1986 she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and underwent nine months of chemotherapy to put it into remission. 

She will always be remembered for her iconic work on SNL but also for her courage and resilience throughout her fight with ovarian cancer.

Gilda Radner tragically passed away at the age of 42 due to ovarian cancer on May 20, 1989. Her husband, actor Gene Wilder, was by her side when she lost her life at 6:20 am in her sleep at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre hospital. 

According to Hospital spokesman Rachel McCallister, “Wilder fought hard, and she was an audacious and courageous lady who didn’t give up easily.”

Right before her death, she had completed work on her book about her battle with cancer – a topic she discussed in an interview for a magazine in the 1980s, saying “cancer is the most unfunny thing in the world.”

She was most known for her five-year stint on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”, where she joined forces with other comedy greats such as Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Garrett Morris, Bill Murray and John Belushi. 

Radner gained renown for her beloved characters like Roseanne Roseannadana and Emily Litella. Her incredible wit and ability to bring so much hearts to her roles made her one of the most beloved stars of Saturday Night Live.

Cause of Gilda Radner’s death via ovarian cancer

Mutations may prevent the cell from carrying out these instructions, causing cells to divide more rapidly and form a mass of tissue known as a tumor. 

This biological process can be spontaneous or due to exposure to certain substances such as hormones in the body. 

Although family history is an established risk factor for developing ovarian cancer, other potential causes include age, smoking, being overweight and ethnic background. Yet another factor which could increase the risk of ovarian cancer is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). 

It’s important that women are aware of the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer, such as needing to urinate often and abdominal bloating but remain ever mindful that if one has any concerns around possible symptoms then consulting with a doctor is their best option. 

If a diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer is made, it’s essential for each person to discuss treatment options with a healthcare team who will create an individualised plan consisting of a combination of surgeries, drugs and/or radiation therapy.
