Graham Petrie Obituary, Death – When we heard about Graham Petrie’s death on December 9, it crushed our hearts. The extraordinary impact he had as a filmmaker, writer, and educator will live on in perpetuity because of the legacy he left behind. In particular, Graham’s influential role as a faculty advisor and member of the McMaster Film Board left an indelible mark on the institution. Two films he restored in 2008 demonstrated his remarkable skill and commitment to the craft,

and his creative abilities were on full display. Everyone lucky enough to study under his tutelage felt the profound impact of his genius as a writer and teacher. He peacefully passed away, accompanied by his cherished daughters, marking the conclusion of a life well-lived. A man of extraordinary modesty and generosity, Graham was also a titan of intellect. His willingness to share what he had learned was only surpassed by his ravenous appetite for intellectual inquiry.

Graham had an impact outside of academia and had been a member of the Toronto Film Society since 1965. His commitment to promoting film scholarship was highlighted by his time as Scholar in Residence and his critical role in coordinating the Raiding the Vaults seminars at George Eastman House. Graham was presented with the first-ever Graham Petrie Award in December 2022 by the Toronto Film Society in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the film community.
