Richmond Oilers basketball team 1999 was an undefeated team of the season. The freshman, junior varsity, and varsity teams were 13-0, which was a good start for Richmond's history.

The name of the real-life players of the Oilers has been changed in order to maintain their privacy and not to embarrass the students with the implications of criminal activities. The only student based on the real life was Ken's son Damien. 

Despite being the best team of the season, Coach Carter implemented a lockout due to their poor performance in academics. Several players were regularly late for their classes, failed to submit their homework, and received below 2.3 GPA.

Coach Carter True Story

The 2005 film Coach Carter is based on the true story. The events showcased in the film took place at Richmond High School where a basketball coach named Ken Carter locked his players out of the gym for not honoring the academic and behavioral contracts that the players has signed at the beginning of the season.

He had refused his players to compete in the game until they got their grades up. The lockout became national news and California Governor Gray Davis praised and called him a hero.

The real-life coach of the Oilers was involved in the production of the film. So, he made sure that the movie was close to accurate and truthful as possible. 

Coach Carter Ending: What Happened To The Players

The movie doesn't have a cliche happy ending like most of the films; instead, it has a rocky end. The Oilers reach the State Quarterfinals match but unfortunately, they lose the game by two points.

Despite the loss, Ken expresses his pride and happiness that the team came together and learned that sports aren't all that matters. Education is also an important part of our lives.

The movie ends with Oilers celebrating with their community.

Coach Carter Real Life Players: Where Are They Now

Most of the real life players that Carter coached during the 1999 season have kept a low profile now. But some players have succeeded in life after graduating from Richmond High School.

Courtney Anderson became an NFL player and played for teams such as Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, and Atlanta Falcons. Currently, he serves as a firefighter in Milpitas, California.

Chris Gibson attended Tulane after his high school graduation and planned to become a businessman. 

Wayne Oliver became a professional basketball player and has played on the international pro basketball circuit. He has played in several countries such as Egypt, Japan, Mexico, Canada, and Dubai.

Damien Carter, Ken's son, currently serves as the CEO of VET Logistics and is a philanthropist.
