Is The Conjuring Based on a True Story?

Yes! Based on a true story, the Perron family is claimed to have experienced The Conjuring throughout the 1970s in their farmhouse in Rhode Island.

All of the family members had experienced something freaky such as ghostly kisses in the midnight and being forced out of their beds. Some were being preyed upon by Bathsheba Thayer.

The Perrons even made contact with Ed and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators who were successful in making the Amityville Haunting famous.

Whatever happened to the Perron family in that farmhouse appears to have been extremely genuine, irrespective of whether the haunting actually took place as it was shown in the movie.

Ed Warren and Loraine, The Investigators

Ed Warren, a veteran of World War II and a former police officer, became a self-described demonologist after independently researching the issue. 

His wife, Lorraine, said that she was a psychic and clairvoyant who could communicate with the spirits that Ed had uncovered.

The New England Society for Psychic Research is the oldest ghost-hunting organization in New England. It was established in 1952 by Ed and Lorraine. 

After conducting their initial investigation into the Amityville hauntings, they immediately established a reputation as reputable paranormal investigators.

Meanwhile, the Conjuring film franchise, which centers on Ed and Lorraine’s encounters summoning demons from two afflicted households, has greatly publicized their two most well-known cases.

The Warrens insist that all of the occurrences portrayed in the films genuinely happened, despite how overly dramatic and unbelievable they seem to be. 

Lorraine, who served as a consultant on the movie even after Ed passed away in 2006, claimed that she tried to stop the filmmakers from using more dramatic license than was absolutely required.

Still, many people and movie lovers ultimately find The Conjuring’s genuine storyline to be horrifying and almost unimaginably disturbing.

The Perrons

The real Perrons for around 10 years lived in the farmhouse, which is located in Rhode Island, near the little town of Harrisville. It was winter when Roger Perron and his wife, Carolyn Perron bought the house in 1970. 

The farmhouse was constructed on 200 acres of land, which was enough to accommodate the Perrons and their five children, Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cynthia and April.

They moved to the farmhouse in January of 1971, since then they started experiencing strange things happening to them.

The first family members to begin noticing spirits were their daughters. even though they were mostly unharmful. But, a couple of them were outraged.

According to sources, Carolyn looked into the house’s past and found that the same family had owned it for eight generations. So a large number of them had passed away in eerie conditions. 

A couple of the kids had committed suicide by hanging themselves in the attic, one had been killed, and many had drowned in a nearby creek. In June 1980, the Perron family moved out after having near-death experiences.

Bathsheba Sherman Thayer was the most repulsive ghost, which caused them real harm at that time and it was also shown in the movie, The Conjuring.

Nobody can definitively say if she was a witch or merely a folk tale during that time, but Bathsheba was a real person who died in 1885 from a paralysis.

The Haunted House

The house that was used in The Conjuring movie was not the real farmhouse that is haunted. However, the set was recreated using the budget of $13 million for the movie.

The research into the actual event of The Conjuring showed that Rhode Island doesn’t even have any laws requiring home sellers to disclose to potential buyers the possibility of a supernatural force or any paranormal activity that has occurred on the site. 

Yet, Andrea Perron writes in her book ‘House of Darkness House of Light’ that the seller of the home advised her father to “…leave the lights on at night” on the same day the family had moved in.

Andrea claims that the family stayed there because of their difficult financial situation until they were able to relocate in 1980, during that time the ghosts were put to rest and the hauntings stopped.

How Different Is the Movie from a True Story?

The very first Conjuring made $137 million in the United States, but it also drew a lot of undesirable tourists to Rhode Island.

When making a movie, it is apparent that there will be many differences because of the setting, timings, and storyline, therefore a perfect copy should not be expected.

In contrast to the movies, Ed never carried out any kind of exorcism, particularly given that only a Catholic priest is permitted to do such. 

Even though the Warrens occasionally collaborated with clerics. However, they agreed that in this case, calling a ghost through a séance would be beneficial.

But like many other films, this one almost perfectly sums up the actual events that the Perron family went through.
