Joe Alt, Chargers Agree to Rookie Contract; Jim Harbaugh's 1st Pick in 2024 NFL Draft | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
William Harris The Los Angeles Chargers officially signed No. 5 overall pick, offensive tackle Joe Alt, to his rookie contract on Monday.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal will be a four-year, $33.2 million contract with a $20.9 million signing bonus. The Chargers will also have a fifth-year option on the deal since Alt was a first-round pick.
Alt, a unanimous All-American in 2023, was considered the top offensive lineman and the No. 5 prospect overall by the B/R NFL Scouting Department on its final big board this offseason, earning the superlatives of Best Run-Blocker, Best Zone-Blocker and Most Pro-Ready.
The Chargers had an interesting choice to make at No. 5, with three quarterbacks (Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye) and one wideout (Marvin Harrison Jr.) off the board.
Would the team get Justin Herbert more playmakers in the passing game after the offseason departures of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler? Or would they bolster the trenches to protect Herbert?
With Jim Harbaugh installed as the head coach and known for building around a bruising, run-heavy offensive scheme, the Alt selection didn't come as a major shocker.
"I said it from the beginning when we started talking about the draft, we were going to take the best player available for the Chargers," general manager Joe Hortiz told reporters after the draft. "(Alt) helps our team and he helps us get better. We want to get better with every pick, and that's what we feel like we did."
The Chargers also added J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards in the offseason, along with drafting Ladd McConkey, so they will have weapons.
Perhaps a wideout like Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze would have added a more dynamic weapon, but the offensive tackle combination of Rashawn Slater and Alt should keep Herbert upright going forward.
