John James Luther Sorensen, a devoted family man and proud naval veteran, passed away on July 23, 2023, after battling health challenges. He was a cherished husband, loving father, and doting grandfather.

Throughout his military service, John’s musical talents shone brightly. 

He played the clarinet and served in band units stationed in Little Creek, VA; Charleston, SC; Great Lakes, IL. 

He also aboard the USS Blue Ridge in Japan and the Western Pacific Unit. John was also a dear friend to many; his kindness, enthusiasm, and faith will be sorely missed.

Early years and military service

John Sorensen, born to Kathleen and James Sorensen in Racine, Wisconsin, completed his studies at Washington Park High School in Racine, graduating in 1986. 

He embarked on an eleven-year service in the United States Navy shortly thereafter. 

In 2013, John joined the Navy Reserves and became Chief Mass Communication Specialist and Senior Enlisted Leader to the Navy Reserve Navy Office of Community Outreach. 

His fellow sailors highly respected him and proud to be a mentor to many.

Love, music, and education

John met the love of his life, Karen Lewicke, in the early ’90s, and they married on August 2, 1996. 

Together, they raised Erin and Kyle and welcomed their daughter, Hannah, in 1999. 

John’s passion for music led him to pursue a degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, which he obtained in 2001. 

From there, John embarked on a career as a high school band director, teaching at Wilmot High School from 2001 until his unfortunate passing. 

John received his Master of Music from Carthage College in 2008, further cementing his expertise in the field.

Musical accomplishments and community involvement

John’s love of music was not limited to the classroom.

Throughout his life, he participated in various local ensembles. 

These included the Kenosha Pops Band, UW-Parkside Community Band, Racine Concert Band, Swing Nouveau, Wisconsin Chamber Brass Quintet, and Southport Sound. 

He gladly lent his talents to good causes and was a staple at community events, such as the annual Kenosha Classic Cruise-In, where he played alongside fellow musicians.

John was also a dedicated Christian and member of Reach Ministries, a New Life Kenosha church.

Visitation will be held on July 29, 2023, at the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. 

A Christian Funeral Service immediately followed, celebrating John’s life and honoring his many achievements. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to the “John Sorensen Memorial Fund.” 

This will support educational initiatives in the community and honor his lifelong dedication to teaching and mentorship.

John will be remembered for his immense love of family, passion for music, and deep commitment to service.
