Judith’s full name was Judith Jan Leyster, and she was born on July 28, 1609, in Haarlem, Netherlands. She was around 50 years old when she died. Her date of death was confirmed to be February 10, 1660. 

According to sources, it was confirmed that the cause of Judith Leyster’s death was a minor illness. However, some people disregard her illness and claim that Judith’s death was natural. 

Judith was admired for her abilities, but it was found that after her death, all her paintings were forgotten.

As mentioned before, Judith was a Dutch Golden Age painter who passed away at 50 on February 10, 1660. She signed with a monogram for her initials JL and a star.

She signed because of her name, Leyster, which means a leading star in Dutch. She was often described as a leading artist. Leyster, at that time, was a common name among Dutch mariners.

Judith’s father owned a company that was titled Leister Brewing Company. This company was located in Haarlem. After Judith completed her painting, she would sign on her work, but she didn’t write her full name. 

Judith did not receive a high-end education, but Frans Pietersz de Grebber, who was operating a workshop in Haarlem, taught Judith how to paint in 1620.

In 1936, she was married to her husband, Jan Miense Molenaer. He had a better career than her wife, but their age was similar. Judith had more students, and her husband, Jan, had more clients. 

Jan and Judith traveled to Amsterdam as Jan had to capitalize on his success. They resided there for 11 years and later moved back to Haarlem.
