How many times have you experienced rejection before finding the right one? Perhaps you’re looking for love in all the wrong places? Johnny Lee’s lookin’ for love faced so many trials before landing on him. 

It was penned by two teachers in the Gulfport School District, namely Patti Ryan and Wanda Mallette. Then they gave the composition to Bob Morrison, songwriter, who made a “state-of-the-art revision” on the song. 

Unfortunately, Looking For Love had been denied by no less than 20 singers. Then Irving Azoff, a film producer of Urban Cowboy, gave Lee the shot to record the song. Since the singer already recorded a few songs for the movie, he gave it a go. And thanks to the success of the movie, the song became a huge hit. And it hurled Johnny Lee to the limelight. 

The song is somewhat the average style of music, though the lines are more impressive, narrating the life of a tippler who’s been “Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places” until he eventually sees his life partner and drives away toward the city. 

The song ruled the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart for three weeks and reached the 5th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart. It also peaked at the #4th spot in the US Cash Box Top 100 chart. Moreover, it garnered a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America in 1980. 

The singer may not have a chart-topping record, but out of Johnny Lee’s songs, this song has been known as a benchmark in country music, approved even by critics. It is so captivating that one assumes it could achieve success even without the exposure from Urban Cowboy.
