To keep up with the other starry establishments in town (Megève is home to an impressive eight Michelin stars), M de Megève has tapped two-Michelin-starred chef Édouard Loubet to design the menu for Le M Restaurant, which showcases a seasonal selection of French and local dishes. My dish of magret de canard (duck breast, €30 [£27]), a French classic served here with a local pasta, was cooked to absolute perfection. Sadly the vegetarian dish of chard, tomato coulis, garlic, basil and parmesan (€16 [£14]) fell flat, and arrived lacking in both flavor and portion size. The meal managed to end on a high though thanks to the desserts; Loubet has curated a menu of French favourites, think tarte tatin and crème brûlée, which are creatively presented by the hotel’s talented young pastry chef.

If you can only book into one of the two restaurants, then it has to be Les Grands Crus de Fondues. Not only is a huge pot of melted cheese the most satisfying dish to tuck into after a cold wintery day, but here guests are invited to “personalise” their fondue by choosing their favourite fromages from a menu of local French and Swiss cheeses. For a more five-star experience, the restaurant also works with an Artisan Affineur (an expert in aging cheese) to specially select the menu, and has its own cheese expert on hand to help you compose your perfect fondue pot of flavours. There are three tasting menus available (€45 [£40], €50 [£45], €60 [£54]) depending on how many sides you would like to dip, offering everything from kiwi fruit to snails. 

Breakfast is sure to set you up for a day on the slopes, with a great selection of fresh fruit, yogurt from the Savoie region, organic granola, smoked salmon, and cured meats. There’s also a good choice of pastries and as in both the restaurants, the hearty loaves are fresh from the bakery next door. The cheese, honey, jam, and oh-so-light and fluffy butter all come from a nearby farm. In the kitchen, chefs are whipping up the hot dishes, with pancakes, crêpes, pain perdu, and eggs as you like them all available on request. Gluten-free options are also available.

The hotel is also a popular spot for afternoon tea (known as a goûter in French), serving traditional French desserts whipped up by the pastry chef along with hot chocolate and champagne (from €49 [£45] per person). By night, guests can cosy up inside Bar du M sipping on hot cocktails in winter (including the signature, Le "M"ojito), working their way through the génépi tasting menu (a herbal alpine liquer, usually served as a digestive), and snacking on small plates from Edouard Loubet.
