Decorating your own sexy lingerie is one of the most awesome weekend diy projects I've ever tried, so I have a few suggestions for how YOU can do it too — the easy way.

The Background

I decided to sort through my underwear drawer and cull through all the old ragged knickers with holes and ruined elastic. I was left with a pile of practical undies, high cut briefs (mostly black) and practical bras (mostly white).

It was time for a lingerie makeover, as I was officially stuck in the rut.

Recently I watched a documentary about clothes which were made in China, and I was surprised to learn that expensive bras and underwear were made in the same factory, using the same machines and laborers, as everyday bras and underwear. We are simply paying for the designer’s label in many cases.

I was on a budget to update my underwear, so I decided the best option would be to decorate my own underwear. 

Here's how to gather your own supplies and have some fun bringing the sexy back to your lingerie drawer:

1. Buy some basic underwear.

The first step is to buy some underwear in different colors and shapes from your local retail store. It’s best to buy items without patterns if you are going to decorate them later so that the embellishment stands out.

I bought a five pack of basic g-strings, a three pack of lace briefs, a lacy seasonal pair of panties on discount, and some plain high-cut briefs. I prefer to buy cotton underwear as I live in a hot climate.

It’s easy to find low-cost basic underwear for sale online. I found some great inexpensive costumes for role playing, open bras, crotchless panties, pasties, fishnet body stockings, baby dolls, micro thongs, cage bras, and backless bodysuits. There is something for every taste.

Good terms to search online include sexy, exotic, stripper, clubwear and cosplay. Sometimes the stock ships from Asia so remember that you might have to wait up to a month for it to arrive.

Also be careful with sizing and make sure you take your measurements. Watch out for anything one-size-fits-all.

2. Gather iron on patches, badges and other crafty decorations that are easy to apply.

The easiest way to decorate your underwear is by adding an iron-on patch or badge. These are easy to apply as long as you follow the instructions on the packet, as they each can vary.

Basically, you place the badge where you want it and hold a hot iron over it until it stays put (usually several minutes).

Be careful when using a hot iron on polyester and lace trims. They can melt and stick to the iron if you don't watch diligently. Double check to make sure the badge is secured properly and have another go if it hasn’t. If you want to make extra certain it will stay, you can stitch around the edges of the badge while watching television.

I bought my iron-on patches from my local sewing shop, Etsy, eBay and local markets. There is a great range out there. You can even use iron-on letters to spell out words!

3. Grab some fabric pens and think up some sexy phrases.

Fabric pens are also easy to work with. Decide what you want to write or draw and then simply use the pens on your fabric.

If the material is a little see-through, you could even print out a template and trace over it. Depending on the brand of fabric pen you’re using, you may be able to iron over the design to make it last longer. My fabric pens were a little old and didn’t leave a good edge, so it’s best to test these on some scraps of fabric before you commit to your design.

Sexy phrases you might like to use include:

• "F*ck me."
• "I need a stiff one."
• "I suck, You lick."
• "Spank me."
• "Wish you were here."
• "Tie me up."
• "Fun to eat."
• "Naughty."

Etsy can be a great source of inspiration as well.

4. Go the fast and efficient crotchless undies route.

It’s dead easy to make your own crotchless undies from a normal pair of panties. The best underwear to use have a gusset in the middle of the crotch area that is sewn up on all sides in the shape of a rectangle.

You simply take some sharp scissors and make a long single cut in the middle, stopping just before the stitching. These DIY crotchless undies might only last one session in bed, so I'd suggest trying it with a pair that was on sale that you won't feel bad about simply throwing away once you’ve finished.

5. Make it sweet for both of you.

I am keen to try a candy bra. You know the candy necklaces you used to love as a kid? You can get them in a bra and underwear set, which would likely be fairly easy to replicate for yourself with some elastic and candy beads.

I did think about adding studs and rhinestones, but you have to be careful about the underside, as these can be a bit rough. Decorating with ribbon and lace trimmings is another pretty option if you're handy with a sewing machine.

The most important tip I recommend when making OR buying sexy lingerie is to think about how it makes you feel to wear it.

Do you feel sexy in it? I know when I try on a new bra and panties set and take a look in the mirror, I get an instance feeling of, "Yep. That looks HOT on me."

On the other hand, I lusted after the most beautiful corset I found in a boutique once, but it just didn’t look good on me, so I left it in the shop and forced myself to walk away.

If you don’t feel comfortable wearing lace or a G-string, DON'T wear it.

Of course, if you want to be really sexy, you could always just leave the underwear in your drawer ...
