As the New Orleans Saints look to shed payroll this offseason, veteran wide receiver Marques Colston has become a salary-cap casualty.

Albert Breer of NFL.com noted Colston was cut with a "failed physical" designation, citing the league's transaction wire. NFL Trade Rumors noted the move will save $3.2 million in cap space.

Colston was an obvious candidate to be released as the team look for more financial flexibility. The 32-year-old wideout registered career lows in receptions (45), receiving yards (520) and touchdowns (four). 

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis already had a succession plan in mind, as well, telling SiriusXM radio on Feb. 17 that second-year wideout Brandon Coleman "in many ways is the heir apparent" to Colston (h/t Christopher Dabe of NOLA.com).

Now that he's available, Colston should have some suitors throughout the league, especially in what is largely a lackluster free-agent market for wide receivers.

Colston's days of being a No. 1 wideout are gone, but he could still be a solid secondary receiving option for a number of teams.
