NFL Rumors: Aaron Donald Amended Contract, Helped Rams Salary Cap Before Retirement | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Sophia Edwards While Aaron Donald's retirement means that he won't be helping the Los Angeles Rams on the field in 2024, he at least is helping the team when it comes to the salary cap.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reported that Donald and the Rams reconstructed his contract prior to the 10-time Pro Bowler's retirement announcement.
"Per a source with knowledge of the terms, the Rams restructured the deal on Tuesday, March 12," Florio wrote. "Specifically, the Rams converted a $5 million guaranteed roster bonus to a signing bonus. The Rams also converted the bulk of his $10 million salary to an option bonus, dropping the base salary to the minimum of $1.21 million."
It will create an extra $9.1 million in cap room for the Rams in 2024, per Florio.
According to Over The Cap, the Rams will now have more than $30 million in cap space after this restructuring. It also means that Donald's designation will not be made official until June 1.
While the extra room will be helpful for the Rams as it looks to replace Donald, that task itself will be nearly impossible. He has earned eight All-Pro designations, won three-defensive player of the year awards and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl LVI victory.
He registered 340 solo tackles, 260 quarterback hits and 111 sacks. He remained very effective in 2023, with eight sacks and 23 quarterback hits, and helped the Rams crack the postseason again after it missed out in 2022.
Los Angeles will have the No. 19 pick in the first-round in 2024 and taking a defensive lineman could be a tempting option. Regardless, Donald's shoes will not be filled easily.
