Penha Longa Resort, Sintra Review
Michael King The resort has a huge emphasis on gastronomy with their 10 restaurants including two which have a Michelin star: the 22-seat LAB, which offers a tasting menu dinner, created by Sergi Arola, (try his red shrimp lasagne) and Midori, a small but very impressive Japanese restaurant with memorable red mullet sashimi and Japanese charcoal-seared toro nigiri.
Just opened and slated to join the list above is Eneko from Spanish chef, Eneko Atxa, situated in Lisbon itself. With a more casual dining restaurant, Basque, alongside it, Eneko delivers some of the signature triumphs from Atxa's three Michelin star restaurant, Azermundi, such as his roasted and peeled lobster, juice, coffee butter and purple onion from Zalla. More dining from the stars comes with Arola, a popular Sunday lunch destination, where Chef Sergi Arola rolls out a tapas menu and his signature dish of potato bravas. The B-lounge just off the lobby offers American hamburgers; there are traditional Portuguese favourites at poolside restaurant Aqua, and Italian dishes at Mercatto (where a lavish buffet breakfast is also served, with egg dishes to order). Spices Restaurant offers an Asian buffet with highlights from Thailand, India, China and Japan. Oceanfront Villa Tamariz Utopia, in Estoril, draws on the cuisine from Central and South America with zingy ceviches in a beachside setting.
