‘Prison School’ Anime Episode 12 Review: The Fight For Freedom With The Underground Student Council
William Harris Episode 12 "Good Morning, Prison"
The final episode of "Prison School" season one of course begins with Meiko sitting on Anzu's face (yes, that joke applies here) in order to torture an answer out of her.
Part of what makes the boys of "Prison School" so endearing is that their dweeb personalities are both over the top and yet harmless. There's a brief moment of this with Gakuto, who is accused of making up a memory regarding a historical conversation with Kiyoshi - and it's funny because it's possible that he's that obsessed with ancient Chinese history.
Nevertheless, this final episode is full of everything that makes "Prison School" arguably the best anime series of the 2015 summer anime season. Over the course of 12 episodes the series has never held back in its critiques of modern gender roles (i.e. the women are ruling the school), sexuality (i.e. Meiko, Kiyoshi's cross-dressing, and Hana's murderous tendencies), and obsession (i.e. every single character in the series).
What's more is that despite having a pretty good guess of how the goal to get out of the prison would go, there was still plenty of tension and suspense. Not to mention, there were also plenty of seeds planted for a second season (I doubt it won't happen) involving the ultimate reversal: the seemingly righteous Underground Student Council is now forced to endure the torture they inflicted on the boys.
Speaking of the Underground Student Council, I am most anticipating the further characterization of Mari, who allowed herself to take a punch to the face to stop Hana from basically destroying Kiyoshi. Mari maintained herself as the sinister brains behind getting the boys expelled, so her transformation from ruling to prisoner is definitely worth watching.
Overall, there truly are not enough words to describe how amazingly funny, well-structured, and intense "Prison School" is. Sex comedy has long been dominated by gratuitous nudity, but every naked body part is worth the journey.
That is to say, if you're not watching "Prison School," you are really missing out.
