IOWA CITY, Iowa — If ever there was a Camelot era associated with Iowa athletics, it was in the 1980s, with football coach Hayden Fry, basketball coaches Tom Davis and Lute Olson and wrestling legend Dan Gable guiding the Hawkeyes to annual success.

Chalmers “Bump” Elliott hired ’em all.

A towering figure in prestige but not in profile, Elliott guided the Iowa men’s athletics department with steadfast and gentlemanly leadership from 1970 until his retirement in 1991. The wrestling program won 12 national titles, the football team won three Big Ten championships, and the basketball team earned four Sweet 16 appearances during Elliott’s tenure. In concert with women’s athletics director Christine Grant, Elliott built one of the nation’s most stable and successful sports programs.

Elliott, a 1989 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, died Saturday surrounded by his family. He was 94.

“For over 75 years Bump epitomized the best values of the Big Ten athletic conference and its member institutions,” his family said in a prepared statement. “His fundamental beliefs in academic excellence, gender equality, diversity, honesty and athletic achievement guided his life and career as a student athlete, coach and administrator. Bump proudly represented Purdue University, the University of Michigan and the University of Iowa, the Big Ten and the best of college athletics since 1943.”

“As a coach who worked for Bump, you had a sense that he was there with you all the way in understanding the demands of coaching in the Big Ten Conference,” Davis said. “He was a coach’s athletic director, and he was always in the room with you.

“He was a pleasure to work with, and I know Hayden Fry, Dan Gable, (baseball coach) Duane Banks, all the others would say the same thing. Bump understood what it took for success. He excelled as a student-athlete in so many ways, and he was able to carry that over as an excellent administrator.”

Elliott’s résumé ranks among the most complete in college athletics history. He began his football career at Purdue, then left school to join the Marines during World War II. He returned to the United States and played football at Michigan, where he became an All-America running back and the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football winner for the national champion Wolverines in 1947. He coached Michigan to a 51-42-2 record from 1959 to 1968, leading the Wolverines to the 1964 Big Ten title with a 9-1 record and a Rose Bowl victory. He was 8-2 in 1968, then joined Michigan’s administration and helped bring in Bo Schembechler as coach.

As a member of the inaugural Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, Elliott participated in the iconic bowl as a player, an assistant, a head coach, an assistant administrator and an athletic director.

In 1970, he became Iowa’s AD and sought to ease the annual tension that had engulfed the program over the previous decade. He solidified the department and gained a reputation as a firm and caring administrator.

“I met Bump at a hospital in Iowa City in 1971,” former Iowa assistant Jack Harbaugh said in a statement released Sunday morning. “Bump was the AD at the University of Iowa and our family was moving our furniture into our new home in Iowa City. I had spent the day recruiting and (wife) Jackie was overseeing the move. My sons Jim and John were at a local park meeting new friends. On the way home, Jim was hit by a car and transported to the hospital. I rushed home with no information other than one of my sons was injured. On my arrival, I met Bump in the lobby with the comforting words that he would be OK.

“In 1972, Bump’s son, Bobby, started as a sophomore in the Iowa secondary that I coached. Bobby was as tough and competitive as anyone I coached. Bump’s daughter, Betsy, baby-sat John, Jim and (daughter) Joani.”

From the day he was hired, Elliott was viewed as a fair and affable leader who could ease tensions among several factions. He was tested within hours of his hiring on June 11, 1970.

Over a two-month period, Iowa had lost Big Ten championship basketball coach Ralph Miller to Oregon State, and the Board in Control of Athletics had fired football coach Ray Nagel. The same day as Nagel’s dismissal, athletic director Forest Evashevski, whose relationship with Nagel had grown ugly, resigned. The department was under NCAA investigation, and Evashevski touted Elliott as someone who could lead as an administrator and perhaps the football coach concurrently.

Elliott “would be an ideal man for the job of getting Iowa football on top again,” Evashevski told reporters the day of his resignation and Nagel’s firing. Elliott, who coached at Iowa under Evashevski from 1952 to 1956, later called the comments “very flattering” but avoided any direct praise or criticism of his former mentor. Elliott returned Nagel to his coaching role to finish out his contract. Elliott’s mild-mannered approach won over the public, which was skeptical over a Michigan man taking over the Iowa athletic department.

Des Moines Register sports editor Leighton Housh wrote then that hiring Elliott “is an excellent choice” and “My guess is that if anyone can heal the wounds at Iowa City, Bump can do it.”

Longtime Iowa City Press-Citizen columnist Al Grady wrote then that “Bump is just a plain nice guy. No other adjectives are needed. But to add a few, he’s intelligent and honest and loyal and with a ready, and frequent, smile which tells of good disposition and fine sense of humor.”

Still, what Elliott was best known for was how he brought in strong-willed coaches, gave them the resources to succeed and avoided micromanagement. Elliott hired Long Beach State basketball coach Lute Olson on March 18, 1974. Five years later, Olson led the Hawkeyes to a co-Big Ten title. In 1980, Iowa advanced to the Final Four. Olson coached three more years at Iowa with three upper-level Big Ten finishes before leaving for Arizona.

Elliott replaced aging basketball palace Iowa Field House with Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the 1983-84 season, coinciding with George Raveling’s inaugural year. When Raveling left for USC in 1986, Elliott brought in Stanford’s Tom Davis, who promptly took the Hawkeyes to the Elite Eight in 1987 and the Sweet 16 in 1988.

In wrestling, Elliott ushered in one of college sports’ greatest dynasties. He hired Gary Kurdelmeier in 1972, and the program won consecutive NCAA titles in 1975 and ’76. Kurdelmeier later opted to work with Elliott as an administrator, and Elliott chose 27-year-old Iowa State graduate Dan Gable as coach.

“Dan is unquestionably one of the finest young coaches in the world,” Elliott said after hiring Gable.

As perhaps the greatest coach regardless of sport, Gable won 15 national titles and every Big Ten championship in 21 seasons. In dual meets, Gable was 355-21-5 before retiring in 1997.

“Bump was a difference-maker in my life and the lives of many others,” Gable said. “I felt lucky to be under a guy who knew very well what he was doing in terms of his business. At first, he didn’t make any promises, but he said, ‘You do well, and I will do well for you,’ and he honored that. Even though it could have, it never got old for him to see Iowa wrestling win, and that is one of the reasons for our success — because the guy at the top of the department continued to be excited. As much as some people talk, he actually lived his talk.”

As important as men’s basketball and wrestling are to Iowa, football carries the most weight. From 1970 to 1978, Iowa was 25-71-2, yet fans still filled Kinnick Stadium. After replacing Nagel with Frank Lauterbur in 1971 and hiring former Iowa player Bob Commings (1974-78), Elliott knew the next hire was vital to his future employment.

In his biography “A High Porch Picnic,” Fry described his conversation with Elliott when he met with Iowa administrators in 1978.

“Bump told them that I would be the last football coach he would ever hire, and that puzzled me,” Fry wrote. “A little later, I got the chance to talk to him privately and asked him what he meant by that comment. ‘Simple,’ he said. ‘I don’t think they’ll give me a chance to hire another coach, so if you don’t make it, neither will I.’”

On a cold, icy day in Iowa City, Elliott introduced the charismatic Fry — who had been coaching at North Texas State — to the state of Iowa. The Hawkeyes’ version of Camelot debuted that day.

“I have known Hayden Fry for many years and consider him an exceptional football coach,” Elliott said at the time. “His teams combine an exciting and wide-open offense with a sound defense. He has a great football mind and tremendous organizational ability and enjoys a good rapport with his players.

“In addition, he is an outstanding person who is highly regarded by his peers. I am delighted to give Hayden my personal endorsement, and I am sure he will enjoy success at Iowa.”

Fry, the sixth coach at Iowa in a 20-year period, took the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl berth in 1981. When programs ranging from Texas to USC courted Fry, Elliott pushed for an indoor practice facility called “The Bubble.” Elliott supported Fry’s efforts to revamp the Hawkeye brand with new uniforms and a TigerHawk logo. Capacity at Kinnick Stadium grew by more than 10,000, and Iowa qualified for 14 bowls over a 17-year-period. Before 1981, the Hawkeyes had endured 19 consecutive non-winning seasons.

Elliott also made an impression upon a young Fry assistant, Kirk Ferentz, who became offensive line coach as a 25-year-old in 1981.

“An exceptional athlete, selfless leader and Iowa legend, he will be greatly missed,” Ferentz said. “I first got to know Bump when I was an assistant coach under Hayden Fry in the 1980s, and I enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with him for more than three decades.

“I have the highest regard and respect for him and the entire Elliott family. His leadership and vision helped shape the culture and competitiveness of athletics at the University of Iowa. It’s safe to say that Hawkeye athletics would not be where they are today without Bump Elliott.”

Perhaps Elliott’s longest-lasting legacy is the stability he brought to Iowa’s athletic department. Nearly 50 years after his hiring, there have been only two other athletic directors. Current Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby followed Elliott in 1991 and remained in place for 15 years. Current Iowa AD Gary Barta replaced Bowlsby in 2006.

Iowa is the only football program in the nation with only two coaches from 1979 onward. Neighbors Minnesota (10 coaches), Illinois (nine), Iowa State (eight), Wisconsin (seven), Nebraska (six) and Northwestern (six) all have changed leadership multiple times since Fry’s hiring.

Along with induction in halls of fame at both Michigan and Iowa, a street that separates Carver-Hawkeye Arena from the football complex was named Elliott Drive in his honor. Elliott remained a visible face at Iowa sporting events throughout most of his retirement. He frequently watched football games from a suite at Kinnick Stadium and basketball games courtside at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

As Elliott’s health declined, his wife of 66 years, Barbara, died in 2016. One of his sons, Bobby, played at Iowa. He was a two-time academic All-American defensive back and Iowa’s Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient in 1975. Bobby Elliott, who was defensive coordinator under Fry from 1996 to 1998, died July 8, 2017, at age 64 of complications from cancer.

Elliott is survived by daughter Betsy, son Bill and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“Everyone in college athletics who had the good fortune to work with and know Bump Elliott understands the profound impact he had on the athletics programs at Purdue, Michigan, Iowa and throughout the Big Ten for almost 50 years,” Barta said. “He epitomized class — he was a revered leader, colleague, and friend to many throughout his career. He was a dedicated family man and he will be missed.”
