Early Life and Education
Rivers Cuomo was born on June 13, 1970 in Manhattan, New York, to father Frank Cuomo, of Italian descent, and mother Beverly Schoenberger, of German-English descent. Cuomo was raised at the Rochester Zen Center in Rochester, New York until his parents’ divorce in 1975, after which he moved with his mother to Yogaville, an ashram in Pomfret, Connecticut. His mother remarried shortly after to Stephen Kitts. When Yogaville relocated to Virginia in 1980, the Kitts family decided to stay in Connecticut and moved to the Storrs Mansfield area, where Rivers and his brother attended Mansfield Middle School and E.O. Smith High School. At school, Cuomo was a member of the high school choir and drama club, performing in a school production of Grease as Johnny Casino. While in high school, Cuomo temporarily went by the name “Peter Kitts” before reverting back to Rivers Cuomo after graduation.
Rivers Cuomo’s Early Music Career
Rivers Cuomo was captivated by heavy metal and punk-pop music from an early age, receiving his first guitar, a Stratocaster copy, as a gift from his mother on his 14th birthday. He formed the band Fury and wrote his first song, “Fight For Your Right,” a Kiss-style heavy metal anthem. Fury played their first show in September 1984.
One year later, Cuomo rebranded the band as the glam metal group Avant Garde to play heavier metal that aligned more closely with his style. Cuomo continued to lead Avant Garde throughout high school and had a profound impact on the band members.
In 1989, Rivers and Avant Garde moved to Los Angeles, changed their name to Zoom, and played a few big shows to make themselves more marketable. While attending the Guitar Institute, Cuomo wrote songs like “You Overpower Me,” “Anything for You,” and “Xmas in L.A.” and formed the band Fuzz with Patrick Wilson and Scottie Chapman. The band eventually dissolved and rebranded as 60 Wrong Sausages, and with them, Cuomo recorded the Cholesterol EP.
Cuomo also collaborated with Patrick Wilson to pen songs like “The Pop Screen” and “What’s Goin’ On?” while writing his own pieces such as “Sing to Me Slow” and “I Got So Many Problems.” These early songs became the foundation of 60 Wrong Sausages. Cuomo also helped Kevin Ridel record for his Christian rock band, The Truth, performing backup vocals and guitar on several songs.
