He made 15 appearances in 2019, the last five of which were starts, and established himself as a big contributor to the pitching staff in just his rookie season. His eight victories led Cal and matched him for fourth place in the Pac-12. In 81.2 innings thrown, he gave up 88 hits, 47 runs (41 earned), 25 walks, and 50 strikeouts.

He had a big effect as a long reliever early in the season, going seven innings in back-to-back appearances to beat Long Beach State and Washington State. When playing in relief against No. 7 Oregon State on March 22, he won the win by limiting the Beavers to two runs over 5.1 innings.

As a sophomore, Stoutenborough was Cal’s No. 1 pitcher in the weekend rotation, making four Friday starts and going 0-2 with a 4.95 ERA in 20.0 innings pitched. He had a.234 opponent batting average against him, gave up 18 hits in 89 batters faced, struck out 14 opponents, and walked 10 others.

In his final start against San Francisco on March 6, he tossed a season-high 7.0 innings, and he started the year by tossing 6.0 scoreless innings versus Long Beach State. During his junior season, he switched to the bullpen, pitching 41.0 innings across 13 relief appearances, finishing with a 1-2 record, a 3.73 ERA, and a.268 average against.

Rise to Fame

Prior to getting hurt against #22 Arizona, he had pitched 5.0 innings or more in five straight appearances, with most of them coming in lengthy relief. He returned to the mound after nearly a month off with a scoreless inning against Washington and struck out a career-high seven batters in 5.2 scoreless innings against San Francisco.

In a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary’s, he pitched a season-high 7.0 innings, striking out four batters while giving up just three singles and a walk. He earned his lone victory against #12 Stanford by striking out the only batter he saw, then pitched 1.2 scoreless innings the next day to help Cal win its first Big Series since 2014, and tossed 2.0 hitless innings in Cal’s 10-3 win against #10 Oregon.

Sam led all pitchers in the Pac-12 in 2022 with 38 strikeouts while issuing only eight walks, ranking 12th nationally with 1.21 walks allowed per nine innings. He began the year as Cal’s No. 4 starter before moving to the bullpen and ultimately into the weekend rotation.
