Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Super Bowl video has received appreciation and acknowledgment from all around the world. Fans could not help but stand in awe of the Emmy-winning actor and singer’s rendition of ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing.’ 

The sitcom Abbott Elementary actress Sheryl Lee Ralph filled the crowd with enthusiasm and excitement before one of the biggest games of 2023. 

With lyrics written by James Weldon Johnson in 1900, then put to music by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson in 1905, the hymn ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ has held an essential place in the Black community.

“It is no coincidence that I will be singing the Black National Anthem, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’ at the Super Bowl on the same date it was first publicly performed 123 years ago,” Ralph wrote on Instagram shortly before her big moment. 

Many people referred to Sheryl as the showstopper that night. Her performance of the presumed Black National Anthem touched the hearts of the people in the audience and of those who watched the famous video at their homes. 

Shery’s performance was exceptional because her song was a prayer of faithfulness, thanksgiving, and freedom.

Donning a dazzling red ensemble, Ralph was supported by a collection of backup singers clad in white suits who helped elevate her impeccably put-together performance. 

For those unfamiliar with Ralph’s current role on TV, she features as seasoned teacher Barbara Howard on the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning ABC comedy Abbott Elementary alongside Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Lisa Ann Walter, and William Stanford Davis.

Sheryl Lee Ralph, born December 30, 1956, is an American actress and singer.

She made her screen debut in the 1977 comedy film A Piece of the Action before landing the role of Deena Jones in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls (1981), for which she received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical nomination. 

She won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. She became the first Black woman to win the award in 35 years for her role in Abbott Elementary. 

Ralph was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. She is the daughter of Stanley Ralph, a college professor, and Ivy Ralph, a Jamaican fashion designer and the creator of the kariba suit.
