At least 154 people passed away after the tragic events that took place in a popular nightlife district in Seoul, South Korea on Saturday night.

The majority of those killed were young adults aged in their 20s, with more women reported dead than men. According to officials, there are 26 foreign nationals also included in the death toll. 

Three students who attended a school in Seoul, six members of the South Korean armed forces, and three teachers were also killed in the incident. 

The following are the names and faces of some of those who lost their lives, as tributes begin to emerge.

Actor Lee Jihan, 24

Lee Jihan was among the more than 150 victims killed in the crowd surge tragedy Saturday in Seoul, South Korea. His death was confirmed by his agency 935 Entertainment in a statement online on Sunday.

Lee Jihan is a Korean singer and actor who first rose to prominence as a contestant on the second season of “Produce 101.” After appearing on the reality show, Jihan made the transition to acting in 2019 and began his career with a role in the online sitcom “Today Was Another Nam Hyun Day.” 

The actor’s admirers paid tribute to him on Instagram. He “left us too soon,” the business said in a statement shared on its Instagram and Twitter accounts.

Tomikawa Mei, 26

Tomikawa Mei, from Hokkaido in northern Japan, had been studying Korean when she died.

Her father told the Japanese network NHK that he was informed of her death on Sunday by officials.

A policeman picked up her phone when he tried to call her on the evening of the tragedy. “I called her to tell her to be careful,” NHK quoted him as saying, “But she never answered.”

“She was a great daughter…I want to see my daughter as soon as possible.” He has gone to South Korea to identify his child’s body.

Madina Sherniyazova, 26

Madina Sherniyazova was studying for her Master’s degree at Seoul University when she tragically passed away.

Sherniyazova was said to be a very bright student, a natural linguist, and enjoyed being with friends according to the deputy head of her secondary school in Aktobe.

Her mother stated that she had contacted her sister via video link shortly before the tragedy occurred; during which time she seemed to be in high spirits surrounded by friends.

Natnicha Makaew, 27

Natnicha Makaew, from Petchabun province in central Thailand, was a 27-year-old Korean-language teacher who traveled to South Korea for two months for further language training.

She taught Korean in Thailand after majoring in Korean at university, but when the pandemic hit, her teaching career was disrupted, according to Korean media outlets.

She then went to Seoul to pursue further studies in the language and enrolled in the advanced Korean program at the university.

The officials are attempting to bring her body home so that she can have a religious funeral. According to her family, who added that she was an excellent person who loved Korea wholly, this is something that she would have wanted.

Choi Boseong, 24

Choi Boseong was celebrating his birthday in central Seoul when the tragedy occurred.

His girlfriend Gabriela Pare, who resides in the United States, was immediately told about his disappearance by friends who discovered his jacket and cell phone at the scene of the tragedy. 

“Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. They sadly passed away. I am in so much pain right now and there are no words to describe it,” she said in a later tweet upon learning of his death.

Fashion Designer Rhau, 21

At a public memorial for the victims of the recent tragedy in Seoul, 19-year-old Kim Dae-hui came to lay a flower for his friend Rhau, who was among the many who lost their lives. 

Rhau had called Kim from the alleyway as he was being crushed, telling him that he was trying to save the woman next to him before their conversation was cut short. 

The next morning, Kim saw his friend in one of the videos being shared on social media and, hours later, received a call saying that his friend had passed away. Rhau was only 21 years old when he died. 

He had moved to Seoul from Malaysia just last year, but he and Kim had become fast friends.

According to Kim, Rhau worked in construction. Even though their time together was relatively short, Kim will remember his friend as someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Australian Film Producer Grace Rached, 23

The Rached family has sadly announced that their 24-year-old daughter, Grace, was killed in the recent attack.

In a statement to the press, they described her as having always made others feel special and important with her kindness leaving an impression on everyone she met.

They say she will be deeply missed by not only her two sisters but also all those lucky enough to have known this “gorgeous angel” and “life of the party.”

“Grace was an amazing person who loved making films and making people laugh,” Shahn Devendran told the Australian newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald. “This news is absolutely devastating.”

Steven Blesi, 20

The last text Steve Blesi ever sent to his son read: “I know you’re out and about. Be safe.” Steven was one of the two Americans who tragically died during Halloween celebrations in Itaewon.

Upon learning of his disappearance, Mr.Blesi first made an appeal on Twitter Sunday night, urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

After waiting for years to finally have the opportunity to study abroad, Korean learner Blesi’s son passed away.

Upon hearing the news, Mr.Blessi spoke with numbed devastation to the New York Times, describing it as feeling like his “world just collapsing.”

He and his group of friends celebrating their completed midterm exams went to Itaewon for a night out.

All of them were students at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, with Steven Blesi studying international business.

Anne Gieske, 20

Anne Gieske, a University of Kentucky nursing student, was spending her autumn semester in Seoul when she suddenly passed away.

She set up a special Instagram account for the trip and had just posted a picture celebrating her 20th birthday before tragedy struck.

Her father Dan described her as a “bright light loved by all” to NBC News.

The family is understandably devastated by their loss.

CBS also quotes the university’s Korean Language and Culture Club, saying that Anne was a “very kind and outgoing person“.
