Squid Game The Challenge’s Beetle Campbell was ‘locked in room with no daylight’ Thu 23 November 2023 09:41 Celine Byford
Mia Horton Spoilers – Beetle Campbell, player 439 from Squid Game: The Challenge, starred in the new Netflix show taking social media by storm. He sat down with Reality Titbit to spill some serious tea on being locked in a room with no daylight, passing the first game, and living with people plotting against him.
After being scouted via Instagram, Beetle Campbell was immediately up for the challenge. That was especially true when player 439 found out about Squid Game: The Challenge‘s life-changing prize money. Before the “unbelievable” experience began, Beetle had to be isolated in a hotel away from others.
Who is Beetle Campbell on Squid Game?
Squid Game: The Challenge’s Beetle Campbell is a Scottish filmmaker and expedition adventurer living in Fulham. The 27-year-old said he “ticked the box” for the “redhead slightly feral kid” on the Netflix series.
With 30K followers on Instagram, the self-employed star was scouted for the show as he does a lot of outdoor expeditions. However, he said doing the show was “challenging in more ways than he thought”.
For Beetle, it was about challenging himself to see how far he could get to the prize money. Following the “cool but strange experience,” he has one piece of advice for contestants: “Practice the games.”
Player 439 was ‘locked in a room for 9 days’
Before the filming began, producers flew contestants to a London hotel, where they weren’t allowed to speak to any co-stars. They had to then wear face masks when they traveled to an RAF base in buses.
With zero access to daylight, Beetle was one of the stars who were “locked in a room for nine days”. He spilled that more than half of the contestants were eliminated after the first game, leaving 200 in dorms.
He was aware that an environment like that with “hangry” contestants “naturally stresses people out,” but Beetle wasn’t too phased. They had one set of clothes each and were fed small portions three times a day.
Beetle told Reality Titbit: “You are living with people who are constantly plotting against you, stuck in this dorm. You have moments of friendliness and then moments of madness when mind games come out.”
He added: “We had one set of clothes but we would tie them up, start bowling, and use water bottles to play volleyball. It was entertaining and we found ways to pass the time but it was quite intense.”

‘I got the unlucky side of the draw’
While everyone was English-speaking, expedition adventurer Beetle was one of 100 Brits out of the huge batch of contestants to join the line-up. “It meant you segregated yourself into groups you felt friendly with,” he revealed to Reality Titbit.
Beetle made it to the second game, having succeeded in Red Light, Green Light which was an original game Squid Game show. He said, “There’s a 1 in 456 chance, those are your goods. It came to chance, but I got the unlucky side of the draw.”
“I had to fight my way back but I finished in the top third. You don’t know what’s going to be spun, so the more covered you are, the better your odds,” added player 439 on Squid Game: The Challenge.
