It’s very evident that the sturdy weave will last for years to come and never lose its shape, which makes the price point a little more understandable. And while most hats are either offered in one or two sizes, this one comes with four size options, catering to all head shapes — you just need to measure your head first. The hat is so well structured, however, that “it would be awful for travel,” says Anello. It’s unusual to find hats offered in more than one size, let alone two. This one, however, comes in four size options, ranging from small/medium to large/extra large. The extra large option covers heads up to 24.5 inches wide. The design itself balances between sporty and chic, giving you a classic straw hat that can be secured using the drawstrings around the chin. Multiple people have reported however that the seams are not sewn tightly enough, and after some consistent wear, the top half detaches itself from the brim. Perhaps it's safer to reserve it for milder activities, rather than rigorous ones.

The Australian label is no stranger to harsh UV rays, so you can expect this hat to adequately protect your skin from those strong sun rays. The material is a blend of straw and polyester, designed to be light as a feather. As a cute detail, the brim turns up slightly, ensuring it stays out of your face, but it does cut into the amount of shade you get, and it looks a bit young. Pierre notes that “there is nothing worse than a hat that doesn’t stay on your head, so you want to find a size that doesn’t cause it to flop around.” Make sure to measure your frame using a measuring tape before ordering your size.

Besides, who better to buy a beach hat from than three Southern Californian girls who founded the brand, Brixton? You get ample amounts of sun protection through the five-inch brim going all around the head. Chin straps keep the hat from flying away when the salty breeze comes through, and UPF 50+ shields you from harsh sun rays. Unfortunately, you cannot wash off the sweat or the sea breeze from this hat. The 100 percent straw hat won't do well under soaps or direct water. It’s best to spot clean or simply let some fresh air pass through the material.

What to Keep in Mind

Fabric and Material

The first component to look for when shopping for a sun hat is what fabrics and materials are used. Effective sun protective clothing has a weave tight enough to block the sun's rays from reaching your skin. In addition to a tight weave, opt for polyester, nylon or cotton, for even better protection. On top of being soft and breathable fabrics, they’re also easier to roll up and pack into your suitcase. If that’s your goal, opt for options like the Hill House The Sun Hat or Lack of Color Terrycloth Bucket Hat. Straw hats, like the Brixton Joanna Straw Hat and the San Diego Hat Ultrabraid XL Brim Hat offer a little more ventilation but are typically harder to travel in. Still, you’ll find everything from extremely sturdy straw hats (like the Gigi Pip Cara Loren Straw Hat) to packable straw hats (like the Madewell Packable Straw Hat). Ventilation in a hat might be important for cooling air flow, but keep in mind that it has a more open weave that exposes your scalp to a potential sunburn.

While sunscreen is your first line of defense against sun damage, a full day in the sun requires even more protection. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) are nearly the same thing, except the first is commonly used in creams and beauty products, while the latter is used in fabrics and clothing. Skin cancer expert and Dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Mark explains that “a UPF of 30 allows 1/30th of the UV rays to get through. A UPF of 50 allows 1/50th, or in other words two percent to get through and blocks 98 percent”. SPF works in a similar manner, but can also be looked at “in relation to ‘time to burn’, meaning that if someone would burn in five minutes of sun exposure, an SPF of 15 would protect for fifteen minutes times five before they would burn.” If you're wanting more than a stylish shady cover, you'll need to look for a UPF rating between 30 and 50 for max sun protection. Brim Length

Sun hat brims generally span 2 to 5 inches in length. A wide brim hat is five inches or more. A wider brim hat will not only cover your face, but also help to protect your ears, neck, and potentially even the tops of your shoulders. Because the wider brim will block more of the sun's rays throughout the day, it can also hinder your peripheral vision. If you're doing an active adventure, like a hike or wandering a city on vacation, a smaller brim may be a better option. Versus a full day at the beach may require a larger brimmed hat to keep you cool and sunburn free.

Do sun hats block UV rays?

Not only are sun hats stylish, they are an extremely effective way to protect your skin from UVB and UVA rays. Sunscreen is an absolute must, “especially if in a place with significant reflection – such as the pool, ocean, sand, or snow,” says Dr. Mark. There's no better way to ensure that your skin stays protected than with a physical barrier. The American Academy of Dermatology even considers protective clothing a necessary component to keeping your skin safe in the sun.

What is a UPF rating?

Much like SPF, these ratings indicate how much sun you'll be exposed to – only UPF is used in reference to fabrics. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, and The Skin Cancer Foundation explains that the number is in reference to the amount of UVB and UVA radiation capable of reaching the skin through different fabrics. For example, if a fabric has a UPF of 50, this means that the fabric blocks 98-percent of UV rays, and allows 2-percent of the rays to reach the skin.

What UPF rating is good?

The Skin Cancer Foundation actually grants a seal of approval to fabrics that have a UPF rating of 30 or more. They specify that "a UPF of 30 to 49 offers very good protection," while ratings of 50 or more are considered excellent.
