Ten miles south of Munich, the leafy, upscale suburb of Grünwald – home to around 11,000 mostly monied souls – is renowned not just in Bavaria but throughout Germany for being the wealthiest district in the country. 

Home of the Bavarian Film Studios – founded in 1919 and one of Europe’s biggest – it has also long been the locale of choice for a swathe of Deutschland’s most celebrated movers and shakers, including Austrian-German actress Senta Berger, actress and singer Uschi Glas, television presenter and game show host Kai Pflaume, and the Ochsenknecht dynasty, consisting of brothers Jimi Blue (actor/musician) and Wilson Gonzalez (actor), and their father Uwe (actor/musician). 

Never heard of them? Not to worry. The area is also home to many former footballers whose names might be more familiar: Franz Beckenbauer, for example, known as Der Kaiser for his dominance on the field; Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who between 1976 and 1986 scored 45 goals for West Germany; goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who earned 86 caps for Germany; Lothar Herbert Matthäus, who captained the 1990 World Cup winning team.

Something all these legendary players have in common, apart from living in Grünwald, is that they have all also played for – and in many cases are still connected to – FC Bayern Munich; as have fellow local residents Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Jerome Boateng, Miroslav Klose, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Alphonso Davies, Benjamin Pavard and Leroy Sané. 

It seems likely then, that England captain Harry Kane, the club’s latest signing, will also make the move there. 

His ample wages (a reported £400,000 a week) should help him fit in nicely with the well-heeled, villa-owning community of Grünwald – the Alderley Edge of Germany, some might say, in reference to the favoured home of many Manchester-based footballers. Not that their eventual home will be on public display. Most of the luxury properties here, which in some cases can sell for up to £20 million, are well hidden behind hedges, trees and security fences. They also, in case you were wondering, very rarely have their inhabitant’s names displayed on the front gates.

You’ll probably spot the occasional Ferrari or Porsche parked along the pristine, tree-lined streets, though, and while you probably won’t get spontaneously invited to a kick-around in one of the capacious private gardens or stumble upon an all-star Grünwald pool party, it’s entirely possibly you could bump into a celebrity during a stroll or at one of the area’s plush cafes and restaurants – low-key cafe Lang’s, for example, or Asian hotspot Chang, which are both frequented by footballers and silver-screen aficionados alike. You can also catch them at Munich hotspots like Matsuhis in the Hotel Mandarin Oriental.

Also of interest to visitors is the borough’s pleasant cycling and walking trails, which cut through lush forest, and 900-year-old Grünwald Castle. One of the most important in the area, and home to a surprisingly engaging Archaeological Museum, it offers impressive views over the Isar Valley from the tower. 

You’ll be certain to brush shoulders with the rich and famous at the Bavaria Film Studios, which is still very much active in producing movies and TV shows and can be toured. It boasts an prestigious history, with Alfred Hitchcock shooting two of his early films there and illustrious names as Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor having graced the place. For German film history buffs, the studios are where Wolfgang Petersen shot Das Boot and where Rainer Werner Fassbinder filmed his groundbreaking television production of Berlin Alexanderplatz.

A 90-minute tour will take you through a sprawling network of studios, workshops, post-production rooms and costume and furniture areas, showcasing the fairy-tale palace set from Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), the original model of a submarine from Das Boot, and the village and Roman arena from Asterix and Obelix against Caesar. There’s also a 4D cinema on-site; visit at the right time and you might spot Kane and his family enjoying some popcorn and hoping fervently for English subtitles.
