However, what seemed like a joyous occasion quickly turned into a horrific nightmare that claimed the lives of Marlee, two friends, and left the community shaken.

Inside the Murder Case

During the birthday celebration in Carroll County, something terrible happened that made a very happy atmosphere horrifying. 

As the night went on, Marlee Jones Barnhill’s husband, Michael Barnhill, became drunk and lost control.

People who saw him said he looked angry and ready to fight, a sign that something terrible might happen.

Marlee knew her husband was in a dangerous state, so she bravely tried to stop him from hurting himself or others by keeping his truck keys away. 

Sadly, her efforts didn’t work. In the chaos, Michael angrily went to his truck and returned with a gun.

He pointed at it, trembling as he walked back to the house. Later, Michael started shooting, and the first person he targeted was Marlee, who was his wife. 

Friends Brooks Hooker Harrell and Jim Harrell attempted to shield Marlee but also suffered injuries. 

A 10-year-old child and two of his pals, Mauri Suggs and Amber Garrard, were caught in the rising violence and were forced to observe this horrible episode helplessly. 

Screams and gunfire reverberated throughout the house, leaving everyone who witnessed this terrible act of violence with a lasting impression.

Michael Barnhill murder investigation: Michael was detained

The crime scene was carefully marked off and became the main focus of the investigation. 

Forensic specialists meticulously documented the area by taking photos and gathering physical evidence that could provide insights into what happened and who was involved.

Marlee Jones Barnhill, Brooks Hooker Harrell, and Jim Harrell were among the victims whose bodies were sent to the medical examiner’s office for autopsies at the same time.

Highly skilled doctors carefully examined the cause and manner of death through thorough tests.

They studied the bullets’ path and other interesting facts that could help with the investigation.

In order to determine why Michael Barnhill did such a heinous act, the investigators dug extensively into his background, personality, and relationships.

Michael Barnhill entered a guilty plea to three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault on Monday after around eight months of deliberation.

He received three life sentences for the killings and an additional 20 years for the alleged violent assault from presiding judge Joseph Loper.

He claimed that the family was happy to avoid a trial, adding that the day had been emotionally taxing.

Judge Loper, a veteran of 25 years on the bench, claimed that this was the coldest case he had ever seen.

Michael Barnhill was charged with capital murder by the state, which meant that he might have received the death penalty if found guilty.
