When unusual situations from the past are discussed on social media, they often go viral and gather elicit witty comments from users. However, it becomes even more intriguing when such anomalies occur in the world of art.

One popular example is the Mayan relief depicting a spaceship, which is quite remarkable considering it was created during a time when it was unimaginable.

But what adds to the curiosity is when these unexpected elements involve technology. Recently, internet users have been captivated by a peculiar discovery in a 1937 painting by Italian-American artist Umberto Romano.

Titled "Mr. Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield," the painting portrays a scene in an Indian settlement in Springfield, representing the arrival of settlers to the city in the 1620s, which is now part of Massachusetts.

What caught everyone's attention in the painting is the depiction of an Indian holding a rectangular object that strikingly resembles a modern smartphone or an iPhone. The Indian appears to be looking at the object in awe, as if it were his first encounter with such a device.

However, there is a logical explanation for this seemingly anachronistic detail. Brian Anderson, an expert in analyzing such artworks, has concluded that the object is most likely a mirror.

"There's reason to believe, then, that what the man is examining is not an Indigenous object, but rather of European origin, like mirrors, which were presented often in such exchanges," Anderson wrote in an article on Motherboard.

"The way the man holds it up, if indeed he's looking at his own face reflecting back at him, would certainly make sense."
