No matter how long you've been in the workforce, the struggle to pick out an outfit for the office seemingly never ends. The goal is cute, yet comfortable enough for a long day. Professional-looking, yet fun enough to still wear after hours. You could easily spend a large chunk of time in front of your closet, struggling to pick out a shirt to go with a certain pair of pants. Or, you could head to St. John, where celebrity stylist Karla Welch has already done the work for you as the brand's new Creative Consultant.

Know for dressing stars like Olivia Wilde, Hailey Bieber, and Tracee Ellis Ross, as well as launching an online styling app, WISHI, to help people curate their closets, it's safe to say Welch has never steered you wrong when it comes to what to wear. She's a pro at knowing how to put together an impeccable outfit, and tells InStyle that right now, there's a gap in what's available for young professionals — which is where St. John comes in. The brand's 65-piece FOUNDATION collection includes blazers, pants, dresses, denim, tees, and belts that are meant to be the base of any look, and Welch is helping add a little spice to these sleek, everyday staples.

"I think this is really focused on a demographic who really needs clothes for work," says Welch, adding that this line is more timeless than super trend-focused. "What I see to be really missing in the marketplace for mid, younger professionals and women in their 40s is just something sharp to put on that doesn't feel too branded or aligned with certain designers. That just feels classic, beautiful, and easy to wear, and that makes their life easier while making them feel great."

However, Welch says these pieces will also appeal to St. John's traditional customers, as well as those who are younger and older. "Everybody needs a perfect T-shirt, or a great pair of pants, or a blazer in their wardrobe, and this is what FOUNDATION is offering."

To prove just how versatile these items are, St. John tapped Chef Esther Choi, Artist Blanda, and L.A. Dance Project’s Nayomi Van Brunt for its campaign. A press release notes that the photos, which were shot in Southern Californian, will "further showcase how the FOUNDATION collection fits effortlessly into any everyday occasion."

Welch says that her main goal for this new position is to simply add a "practical spin to things" while the St. John's design team does their thing. However, she has been more involved in the process for next drop, providing input and requesting specific items.

"Sometimes, the stylist has to come in and say, 'Hey, let's make this more wearable this way' or 'This is what I think a customer really wants,'" says Welch. "I have the ability to put on the lens of not just what I personally want but 'Ooh, what do I see missing? What do I hear out there in the world? How can I make this just a little bit more wearable and more doable for a woman who maybe wants to cover her arms? Let's put a sleeve here.' So I consider myself a real pragmatic person coming in to say, 'Let's bring this,' but then also, like, 'Hey, what I dream of is a beautiful, long, satin trench coat. Let's have that added to the collection.' So it's a bit of both, but it's really fun and they're a really great, talented team to get to work with."

Perhaps one of the best things about FOUNDATION is that there really is no need to worry about how to style something. Welch says a big goal for her was making sure people could walk into a store and leave with items that make a full outfit. These pieces, all of which come in the palette of black, navy, ecru, and white, can easily be paired together, like a capsule wardrobe of sorts, as well as with pieces from other St. John collections.

"The concept of really wardrobing someone is quite important. It's making sure nobody doesn't know what to wear with what. You buy a blazer — 'Well, what am I going to wear it with?" We're not all super savvy. Or this skirt, 'Well, what's the best way to wear it? How can I wear it more than once?' Adding FOUNDATION as an evergreen situation to all the collections is just adding another practical way of making sure your clothing collection is completely well rounded."
