QUEBEC CITY, Canada -- Top seed Nicole Vaidisova pulled out of the WTA Bell Challenge tournament in Quebec City when a wrist injury forced her to quit at one set all against Czech Renata Voracova in the first round.

Vaidisova was level at 6-2 3-6 against Voracova when she had to retire.

World number 12 Vaidisova was tied 6-2 3-6 when the injury, to her right wrist, prevented her from continuing.

Voracova will face American Vania King in round two.

American fourth seed Meilen Tu also made an abrupt exit, soundly defeated 6-2 6-2 by Swede Sofia Arvidsson.

The Swede now tackles either American Lindsay Davenport or Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in the quarterfinals.

Second seed Vera Zvonareva, of Russia, was fully extended by France's Severine Bremond in another first round match.

The 23-year-old Zvonareva won 6-3 7-6 and goes on to meet either Olga Poutchkova of Russia or Jill Craybus of the United States.

Third-seeded Julia Vakulenko was taken all the way by Canadian Stephanie Dubois before winning 6-1 2-6 7-5. E-mail to a friend
