Williams Expected to be Ready for Training Camp
Wednesday, June 17
Head coach Jay Gruden said he believes Williams will be ready for training camp, John Keim of ESPN reported.
"I wish he would've gotten the work with coach Callahan," Gruden said. "Trent is a very smart guy and he's been attentive in all the meetings. I just wish he would've got the reps, but it's not really a concern. If that's my only concern going in [to camp], it's very minor so that's good."
"Nothing major at all. We wanted to get it under control right now. I didn't want to have to deal with it all season," Williams said about his injury, per Chris Russell of ESPN Radio 980 on June 6. "If I treated it the right way, right now (rehab) I wouldn't have to go under the knife of any kind," Williams added, according to Russell.
Williams also spoke about his diagnosis, "I come to find out I had a torn deltoid ligament," per Russell.
Obviously it's not ideal for the Redskins to start doing their main offseason work without their left tackle on the field. That said, it's more important for him to make it back to full strength for Week 1. Ankle issues tend to linger, especially for players who use their legs for leverage every play.
It's no big deal as long as Williams is able to stay on track for a return at training camp. If those practices begin and he's still not ready to participate, then it will be time to raise some red flags. But it's good to see him putting in the work to take some stress off his lower half.
Morgan Moses and Tom Compton will probably pick up the slack in the meantime.
