The referee Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook at the centre of the Var disallowed goal chaos for Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur last month have both been brought back in from the cold by Howard Webb.

Having been taken off the appointment lists for their remaining games before the international break, England and Cook are back on Premier League duty this weekend.

England will be back as the fourth official for Brentford’s home game against Burnley on Saturday. Cook has been appointed as one of the assistant referees for Sheffield United’s home match against Manchester United.

It was their lapse of concentration that meant Luis Diaz’s legitimate goal against Spurs on Sept 30 was ruled out for offside. England and Cook, Var and assistant Var for that game, had not noticed that on-field referee Simon Hooper had disallowed the Diaz goal. Working on the mistaken basis that the goal had been given, England checked it was onside and gave the “check complete” all-clear to Hooper.

Only once the game had restarted did England and Cook, at the prompting of the Var replay operator Mo Abby, realise their mistake. Once the game has restarted, the laws dictate that Var cannot go back to a previous decision even if those involved know that an error has been made.

While Webb, the chief refereeing officer of PGMOL, the referees’ organisation, has brought the pair back swiftly they are not likely to officiate Liverpool games this season. In the past PGMOL has kept officials away from clubs for whom they have made controversial or erroneous decisions. The unofficial policy was in order to relieve pressure for officials and placate clubs.

Hooper has been appointed the Var for Newcastle against Crystal Palace. The referee Michael Oliver, fourth official for the Liverpool defeat at Spurs, will take charge of Sheffield United against Manchester United. Webb said this week that Oliver should have dismissed Mateo Kovacic in Manchester City’s defeat to Arsenal in the most recent round of Premier League fixtures.
