In times of war, there’s no one thing we want to save but our dear nation. Hence, our mighty soldiers valiantly defend and fight for us during these times of infamy and catastrophe. This Veterans Day, we cannot thank them enough for all their efforts and sacrifices.

Patriotism, love of country, and freedom are the theme of most country songs ever released. This goes to show that most of the country stars have a great sense of cause in their music. In fact, some of our well-loved artists have actually served in the military before they rose to fame and prominence.

Furthermore, these country music artists did not just serve in one branch but all branches of the U.S. military. To cite an example, we have George Strait who served in the Army, Johnny Cash joined the Air Force, and George Jones was in the Marines. It is undeniable that country stars have always shown support for our troops, these men, however, have pledged themselves at protecting the great Uncle Sam.

For those of you who didn’t know, here are five of ten country artists who showed their support by serving the U.S. Military. During this day in commemoration of the Veterans Day, we sincerely thank them for their efforts of making our nation, the Land of the Free, the Home of the Brave!

1. George Strait

Before he entirely became “The King of Country,” George Strait spent his time first in the military. As a matter of fact, he got his start in music because of his prior experience in the Army.

First stationed at Scholfield Barracks in Hawaii, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1971. While he was in Hawaii, he came to realize that his true passion was music. Thus, he began singing with an Army-sponsored country band named Rambling Country. The band also played off of the base.

After four years, Strait was honorably discharged from the Army. He then enrolled at Southwest Texas State University. While in college, he stayed true to his roots and continued performing in a local country band. In 1981, he released his first ever single, “Unwound.” Strait then grew to become a superstar earning 61 number one hits and the title, “The King of Country.”

2. Willie Nelson

Another country legend, Willie Nelson first entered the military before he got into the country music industry. In 1950, he left school and joined the United States Air Force. He served there for eight to nine months before he went back home.

In 1954, he attended Baylor University where he studied agriculture. Eventually, Nelson dropped out of college and chose to pursue a career in music.

There are a few things known about Nelson’s life in the military, but he is greatly remembered for his patriotism through his music and talent.

3. Kris Kristofferson

Nelson’s fellow highwayman, Kris Kristofferson was born into military life. In fact, he comes from a family who serves the country. His father, Lars Henry Kristofferson, was a United States Army Corps officer. Later, he served as a U.S. Air Force Major General. As a result, Kristofferson’s parents convinced him also to serve the country. Hence, he did!

For five years, Kristofferson served the Army, attaining the rank of captain. Before coming back to the United States, he was stationed in Germany, where he taught literature at West Point.

Although his parents disapproved, Kristofferson left the Army and pursued a songwriting career. Now, he continues to be one of the pillars of what true country music is.

4. Conway Twitty

Harold Jenkins, more popularly known as Conway Twitty, served the country after he graduated high school. Stationed in the Far East, he never forgot to cling to his passion for music. While overseas, Twitty continued to perform in a music group to entertain his fellow soldiers.

When he returned home, he took his stage name and soon rose to fame as a country music artist. And today, we remember him as the man who released a number of love country songs.

5. Craig Morgan

Another huge supporter of our troops, Craig Morgan, served in the U.S. Army for a total of nine and a half years. In addition, he even remained in the reserves for six more years.

When he came back home, Morgan made his way into the country music industry. He then went to release his hit singles, “That’s What I Love About Sunday” and “Redneck Yacht Club.” These songs helped him earn his fame. Soon enough, he got to be a part of the prestigious Grand Ole Opry in 2008.

Until this day, he shows his significant support for our troops by singing at military bases. In 2006, he received the USO Merit Award for his continuing support and efforts for our troops.
