Wednesday 10:14 a.m. update: The 49ers re-signed two players who were with them last offseason — wide receiver Jordan Matthews and cornerback Dontae Johnson. The team also placed center Weston Richburg on injured reserve.

Marquise Goodwin’s 5-yard catch last month against the Cardinals was his final one of the season and likely will be his last as a member of the 49ers.

The team on Tuesday placed Goodwin, 29, on injured reserve and will do the same with center Weston Richburg, as the 49ers begin rounding off the roster for the final three games of the season and a push through the playoffs.

Richburg tore a patella tendon in Sunday’s win over the Saints while Goodwin has complained of chronic knee and foot issues and has been a non-factor for the last two months. He will have a procedure on his knee that will prevent him from playing for the next few weeks.

The 49ers didn’t fill Goodwin’s spot on Tuesday and likely will wait until the end of the week, when their injury situation becomes more clear, to make more roster moves. They’re currently thin at four positions:

• Defensive line: Defensive end Dee Ford likely will miss the rest of the regular season after aggravating a hamstring injury Sunday. Meanwhile, the team’s top two nose tackles, D.J. Jones (ankle) and Jullian Taylor (elbow), are injured with Taylor expected to miss another week with his injury.

The 49ers could activate Kentavius Street from injured reserve or promote undrafted rookie Kevin Givens from the practice squad. Since the team doesn’t have to make a decision until Saturday, coaches likely will monitor the two in practice and base their decision on how they perform.

• Cornerback: Richard Sherman also is dealing with a hamstring strain and could miss “a couple” of weeks, Kyle Shanahan said Monday. Meanwhile, K’Waun Williams is in the concussion protocol after making a tough, open-field tackle in the fourth quarter Sunday.

Ahkello Witherspoon and Emmanuel Moseley will start Sunday’s game against the Falcons at outside cornerback. If Williams can’t play, D.J. Reed would step in at nickel cornerback. The backups? The 49ers would have to tap a safety, Jimmie Ward or Tarvarius Moore, unless they add someone at the position.

Teez Tabor has been part of the practice squad since Sept. 30, while the team also could activate Jason Verrett from injured reserve.

• Offensive line: With Richburg out, Ben Garland will be the center against his former team, the Falcons, on Sunday. Daniel Brunskill becomes the top backup at center and guard while Justin Skule is the backup at tackle. Since seven offensive linemen usually are in uniform on game days, the 49ers aren’t compelled to add an offensive lineman, but they currently don’t have any on the 53-man roster after Brunskill and Skule.

• Receiver: The situation is similar to the offensive line. The team usually has five wideouts in uniform for games and currently has five on the roster: Emmanuel Sanders, Deebo Samuel, Kendrick Bourne, Richie James and Dante Pettis. In fact, the 49ers only had four — Goodwin and Pettis were inactive — available in the recent win over the Saints. Pettis (knee) is expected to return to practice this week.

Two years ago, Goodwin was, by far, the team’s most promising receiver. He won over the fan base during a Week 10 game against the Giants when he caught an 83-yard touchdown from C.J. Beathard that helped propel the 49ers to their first win of that season. Afterward, Goodwin revealed he and his wife had lost a baby during a premature delivery just hours before the game and his harrowing ordeal and his in-game heroics became a national story.

Goodwin entered the 2017 finale with a shot at becoming the 49ers’ first 1,000-yard receiver since Anquan Boldin in 2014. He scored a touchdown early in the game but was knocked out of the contest by a vicious hit from a Rams defender and ended the season with 962 yards.

The next year he finished with only 395 receiving yards and coaches became frustrated that Goodwin, a former Olympian who’s among the fastest players in the league, would be slowed and made ineffective by relatively minor injuries and ailments. He was like an expensive sports car — capable of reaching top speeds but sensitive and constantly in the shop.

That seemed to be an issue this year as well. He never had more than three catches in any of the 49ers’ first six games, then missed the seventh due to a personal matter. After that, he played in just two more games, including the recent contest in Baltimore in which he was limited to just one snap on special teams.

His last catch was a tough grab for 5 yards late against the Cardinals. But he dropped his next target and seemed to reach down toward his foot after the miscue. On his YouTube channel last month, Goodwin noted that he had an MRI on his foot and knee, which had been bothering him.

However, he never appeared on the 49ers’ practice reports — meaning he was a full participant in practice — until Friday when Shanahan said the issues flared up. With Pettis still coming back from an MCL injury, that left the 49ers short on receivers for what turned out to be a shootout with the Saints.

Goodwin is signed through 2021 season, but his base salary jumps to $3.95 million next year and to $5.3 million the year after that. That promises to be too hefty for someone who had 12 catches this season.

Tuesday notes

• The 49ers have two open spots on their practice squad after releasing receiver Deontay Burnett and linebacker Christian Sam and placing linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles on the practice squad injured reserve list. Flannigan-Fowles suffered an ankle injury during one of the team’s practices in Bradenton, Fla.

The team filled one spot by signing linebacker Joey Alfieri, who played at Stanford.

• Here’s the list of 49ers on injured reserve: Goodwin, Street, Verrett, linebacker Kwon Alexander, defensive end Ronald Blair, offensive tackle Shon Coleman, cornerback Tim Harris, receiver Jalen Hurd, offensive lineman Andrew Lauderdale, running back Jerick McKinnon, defensive end Damontre Moore, receiver Shawn Poindexter and receiver Trent Taylor.

• The 49ers can clinch their first playoff berth since the 2013 season with a win Sunday or a loss or tie by the Rams who are in Dallas, or losses by the Vikings and Packers, who play the Chargers and Bears, respectively.
