He was brought up by his parents named Dorian Waller, and Charlena Waller. Darren is also the great-grandson of Fats Waller who was a jazz pianist and composer. 

He attended Georgia Tech, where he played collegiate football. He was the 204th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and the Baltimore Ravens selected Waller in the sixth round. 

Later that year, he was selected as the 27th wide receiver. On 7 May 2015, due to his incredible performance, the Baltimore Ravens signed him to a four-year contract which was finalized to pay him $2.39 million.
