Who voted for whom in the new system?

In a nail-biting grand final, Ukraine was declared winner on Saturday night in the 61st Eurovision Song Contest with more than 500 points.

But, as the new system was more opaque about who gave whom how many points, the Telegraph has compiled the charts that show how each country voted on the night.

The United Kingdom came a poor 24th place in the contest, although early on the results segment, Malta gave douze points for Joe and Jake. Still, it wasn't as bad as 2003 when the UK received nil points.

The system, which does not tell the viewer which country gave the highest points to another, means that it is not easy to see where political voting blocs exist as we know they have done in previous years.

The results began with 42 countries "spokesmen and women" giving the 1 to 12 points from the jury, with the latter point given to the country by the spokesman/spokesman's announcement.

Then the two presenters began with the least popular countries and their number of votes from the public and then the top 10, beginning at the bottom.

For those who have long been watching Eurovision, it initially seemed like every other year where the winner was obvious long before the end of the results were announced.

But the twist this time was that the phone votes really shook things up. Poland, on a lowly 7 points from the jury, suddenly jumped up into the top 10. Countries like Russia could storm to win or even Bulgaria or France. It was too nervewracking to make any assumptions.

In the end, Jamala's controversial 1944 song won the contest for Ukraine, who will host the competition next year.

No details were given as to what country gave the other (and usually their neighbour) the points.

As Ukraine and Russia were left waiting for results of the public vote, despite winning the jury's vote, Australia came second to Ukraine, which for non-European country was still a fantastic result.

But the political voting and neighbour-supporting Eurovision has not changed. Let's remember that there are three main voting blocs usually:

The Balkans – the countries of former Yugoslavia, as well as Romania and Albania.
The former Soviet Union and its satellite states in eastern Europe
Scandinavia – This includes the main Nordic nations as well as Iceland, Lithuania Denmark and Latvia

This year only Sweden was in the grand final of the contest of the Nordic countries - and all four Nordic countries (Finland, Iceland, Norway and Denmark) had Sweden in their top five.

Greece, which the Telegraph pointed out before the weekend, gives an average of 11.33 points to Cyprus annually, unsurprisingly gave 12 points this year to the small European country. And Italy got its usual high number of votes from Albania, this year 10 points.

Looking at the charts below giving the results of which countries got 12 to 1 points, it is easy to see the continuation of the voting blocs - though that does not mean the winner is only a result of neighbours acting favourably towards each other.
