It takes something special to make a lasting impression on Xabi Alonso, for all the superstars that the 34-year-old has played with over the years, but Luka Modric managed to do just that.

The duo played together at Real Madrid and many considered the Croatian to be the heir to Alonso, both possessing supreme vision and technique.

"I have a weakness for Modric," the Spaniard tells MARCA. "He is a key, fundamental player that is shown when he's on the pitch and when he's missing.

"He does everything well; passing, dribbling, marking, everything. Since he settled into the team he has been instrumental."

Having formed an excellent partnership with Toni Kroos, Modric has excelled at Real with Alonso also heaping praise on the German playmaker.

"Kroos is class, in the control he gives and through his passing range," added the veteran.

Alonso can look forward to returning to the Spanish capital this week, facing Atletico Madrid in the Champions League with his current club Bayern Munich.
