Zion Williamson to Miss Play-In Tournament with Hamstring Strain
Zion Williamson will not be making a comeback before the New Orleans Pelicans’ projected play-in game next week due to a hamstring strain, as The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported.
The Pelicans announced on Thursday that they would continue to rehab Williamson’s hamstring injury, and release additional information if necessary.
The team hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a return if they secure one of the final playoff spots in the Western Conference, despite Williamson’s absence for the remainder of the regular season and the play-in.
The Pelicans are currently in eighth place in the competitive Western Conference playoff picture with a record of 41-39 and have secured at least a spot in next week’s Play-In Tournament.
They still have a chance to secure a top-six seed and guaranteed playoff spot as they sit one game behind both the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors with two games left to play.
Williamson sustained his hamstring injury while running down the court on a fastbreak during a game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Jan. 2.
Although the initial timeline for his return was three weeks, he suffered a significant setback in early February.
The Pelicans were hopeful to have him back for the playoffs, according to a report from The Athletic in March, but it’s unclear if that will be possible.
After Williamson’s injury, the New Orleans Pelicans struggled and lost 10 games in a row, bringing their record to 33-37 and making their potential without Williamson on the court significantly lower.
However, the team has since bounced back, winning 8 of their last 10 games and securing at least a play-in spot.
Prior to his injury, Williamson played in 29 games and had impressive statistics, averaging 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, while shooting 60.8% from the field.
Despite being named an All-Star starter, he was unable to participate in the game due to his injury.
